Essential Loudness Tools
At HHB we are seeing the EBU R128 audio loudness standard come of age in the UK as broadcasters and content producers transition their operations towards a new file-based delivery environment to meet the Digital Production Partnership (DPP) new standards. EBU R128 is applicable to all areas of audio production. Some environments require hardware solutions, others are best solved with software, and applications can be real time or file based. Picking the right product for the job is essential.

The following are some examples of the technologies HHB is deploying for Loudness metering, measurement and correction:
TC Electronic

TouchMonitor TM7 and TM9 Audio and Loudness Meters - Standalone audio and loudness meters with touchscreen control, flexible layout options and an array of software choices from Surround Sound to Real-Time analysers. TouchMonitors offer numerous display options for compliance with all major broadcast standards.

TouchMonitor models come with a basic software package that includes:
Stereo-PPM w/ Analog Scales - DIN5, Nordic, British IIa, British IIb; Stereo-PPM w/ Digital Scales - 0 to -60 dB, +3 to -60 dB TruePeak, DIN5, Nordic, British IIa and IIb; Peak Hold, Peak Memory, Over Indicators and Phase Meter and a Loudness and SPL Licence. Optionally, a broad variation of software modules, or 'instruments', are available as licences:

LM1n  - A Native LM1n Loudness Meter Plug-in that provides essential loudness metering features for any DAW, and off-line measuring in Pro tools. Leaving only a small footprint on the screen, LM1n complies with all international loudness broadcast standards, making it an intuitive tool for audio or video platforms.

LM2n and LM6n Native Loudness Radar Meter
- Plug-ins that measure Loudness and True-Peak on mono, stereo or surround (LM6n) tracks in all major DAWs for compliance with all international loudness broadcast standards.

DB6 - A loudness management processor designed as a transparent one-step loudness management solution for TV and Mobile TV transmission. DB6 handles everything from loudness metering at the input stage, up or down conversion, loudness processing, on-line lip-sync delay to loudness metering at the output stage and logging of all relevant loudness statistics in one simplified process. It is available with SDI or AES I/O.

UpCon - A cinema-quality up-converter for 5.1 HD TV broadcast, which combines an up-conversion and downmix processor in a single, high-density rack unit that includes true-peak correction.
TC Electronic has also released the Loudness Pilot and the new aNorm loudness algorithm for DB6.

LCn Loudness Correct Normalisation Plug-ins
TC Electronic’s LCn Loudness Correct Normalization plug-ins are designed to help audio professionals accurately meet loudness targets for those working in delivery platform such as HDTV, Mobile TV, podcast, radio, iTunes, Spotify, and more.

VisLM 2 - A loudness measurement plug-in with history and logging facilities that provides a simple, ITU, ATSC and EBU standard compliant method of measuring, comparing and contrasting loudness during production, broadcast and post production, in real-time or for entire sections of audio. Recent upgrades include added support for 7.1 channels of audio and other key features.

LM-Correct 2 - A loudness correction plugin designed for playback content that offers automatic correction to international standards. This plug-in provides immediate finishing of audio mixed using real-time loudness meters and loudness consistency monitoring (dialogue clarity, music bed level) to eliminate loudness jumps.

LMB Loudness Management Batch Processor - Provides high-speed automated loudness measurement and correction for multiple audio and video formats. A new Native MXF expansion option provides features to asses and correct audio within an MXF container while leaving other dated intake and writing corrected audio into the original file.

MultiMonitor - A powerful software application that offers 16 individual loudness and true-peak meters to monitor mono, stereo, and 5.1 formats for up to 96 individual audio channels

Loudness Toolkit 2 - A plug-in bundle with everything you need to intuitively produce loudness-normalised audio, seamlessly integrated into your audio production workflow, including: VisLM-H 2, LM-Correct 2 and the ISL 2 - a Real-time True Peak limiting plug-in that is mono through to 5.1 compliant.

The Complete Loudness Solution – This bundle adds comprehensive QA and QC checking, automated correction and detailed compliance logs to provide an end-to-end loudness package. The package includes VisLM, LM-Correct, ISL and LMB plug-ins.

DP580 - A Professional Reference Decoder that replaces all the functionality of the DP568, and adds new capabilities and features. It is a first-of-its-kind TrueHD decoder that enables validation of associated Dolby TrueHD signals encoded in the Metadata-enhanced Audio Transmission (MAT) format. It also monitors the enhanced features of Dolby Digital Plus, including secondary audio bitstream mixing and 7.1-channel decoding and provides a real-time reference tool for generating signals for Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Digital Plus, and Dolby Digital.

Media Meter 2.3 - A software tool that measures loudness in programming for broadcast, packaged media, cinema trailers, VOD and games by featuring Dialogue Intelligence technology adapted from the Dolby DP600 Program Optimizer.

VM600 - A software platform featuring the same loudness correction, audio conversion, and upmixing workflows as DP600 for virtual workspaces. VM600 processes content up to 12 times faster by integrating into VMware and storage environments and provides tools to comply with CALM and EBU loudness standards.

TM3 TouchMonitor – Offering 4.3-inch touchscreen control, TM3 is a comprehensive loudness metering that helps with compliance with all globally relevant standards, in addition to PPM and true-peak instruments. New firmware for the TM3 now includes an emulation of moving coil meters and functions for Loudness Test Time Control. A new moving coil PPM emulation licence is also now available for TM3.

TMR7 TouchMonitor - A 4-Channel Metering Solution with 7-inch touchscreen control that integrates all metering options required in radio broadcasting, including Loudness, true peak, PPM, vectorscope, moving-coil instruments, RTA, and correlation. Two AES3 digital inputs allow for parallel monitoring of the on-air signal and a PFL source.

Masterclass Metering and Loudness Plug-ins

RTW’s new Masterclass Metering and Loudness plug-ins provide the same functionality of the renowned TouchMonitor TM7/9 hardware meters as standard format plug-ins for Windows and Mac OS. Loudness Tools offers True Peak Metering and Loudness displays for mono, stereo, multichannel and surround (up to 8-Ch). Mastering Tools includes all features from Loudness Tools, plus RTW’s Surround Sound ‘House’ Visualiser, Real Time Spectrum Analyser, Vectorscope and Phase Meter (2-Ch and Surround).
