Universities and colleges standardise on HHB PORTADISC for media studies
Cumbria Institute of the Arts, the University of Teesside and Leeds Metropolitan University are the latest in a growing number of further educational institutions to specify the HHB PORTADISC Professional Portable MiniDisc Recorder for use on journalism and media courses. The PORTADISC Reporter’s Kit (in which a PORTADISC is packaged with a Sennheiser MD46 interviewer’s microphone and other accessories in a tough Pelican case) is proving particularly popular, with hundreds of systems already in use at colleges and universities around the country.
Now clearly established as a de-facto standard in further education, academic and resource management staff highlight some of their key reasons for the adopting the PORTADISC.
Keith Coulter, Senior Resource Area Manager for Media, Cumbria Institute of the Arts
“We chose the HHB recorder as we are committed to giving our students the best, so only industry-standard kit will do. The Reporter‘s Kits provide a fully professional specification and can use industry standard microphones and accessories. Last year we purchased our initial five PORTADISC kits and these have been in such high demand that we have now doubled our inventory.”
Angela Ferguson, Technical Director, University of Teesside, School of Art and Media
“We looked at a number of options for portable recording and found that the HHB PORTADISC kit offered a robust, professional solution. The HHB PORTADISC provides our students with essential operational experience, resulting in them being prepared and more confident as they enter the workplace. This summer we’ve made a repeat order for another 10 Reporter’s Kits.”
Rupert Cox, Programme Director, Granada Centre for Visual Anthropology, Manchester University
“The HHB MiniDisc recorder offers just the right degree of fidelity and durability for use in a University course. It is able to meet the demands of students who need to become quickly familiar with the technology and to produce creative works of quality.”
Simon Order, Radio Lecturer and Radio Studio Manager, Thames Valley University
“This year we decided to make a complete switch from consumer MiniDisc recorders to the HHB PORTADISC kits. In addition to the advantages it provides our students, resource management is much easier as the kits are packaged in a purpose-designed case. It’s easy to check that kits are complete when booking them in and out.”
Tarsem Hunjan, Operations Manager, School of Technology, Leeds Metropolitan University
“Controlling cost of ownership was our primary motive when selecting the HHB PORTADISC kits for use on our undergraduate creative music and media courses. We already knew the quality of HHB products and the PORTADISC is known to be reliable and solid.”
Commenting for HHB, Educational Sales Manager Andrew Hingley said, “It’s essential that students are prepared for the real world, and with so many PORTADISCs now in use with broadcasters, it makes sense that the next generation of journalists and reporters learn their trade with a PORTADISC.”
